Trip 9: July 2026. Leyburn, Yorkshire.

Leyburn is nearly our furthest north trip only just beaten by Whitby. This is another THS (temporary holiday site) run by Central Yorkshire district association. The site is a field on the edge of Leyburn with no facilities apart from fresh Water and an Elsan point.

After nearly 3 hours driving we reached Leyburn. There were acres of space available and the stewards suggested a pitch by the fence overlooking the valley. After filling with water we set up and we were soon experiencing the amazing view.
After lunch we read outside before walking into town. We went to the Bolton Arms, got our drinks from a barmaid with limited personality and then we sat outside.

We walked back home in the sunshine which disappeared as soon as we got back to the van.
Tea was Chicken Kiev with chips for me and a salad for Sue.
Day 2:

After all the jobs we headed into Leyburn to the church where we found a footpath sign. The path took us through some fields and across a road to the river Ure. We followed the footpath along the river and then the path became overgrown across some rough pasture. The path lead us to the road.
We followed the road towards Wensley for a while until the wide verge ran out. We crossed the road and entered a nature reserve. It was a hard walk up hill to join another footpath. We followed the path down to Wensley where we stopped at the Three Horseshoes Inn for a drink. We were hoping to sit on the village green under a tree to each lunch but the bench was already in use by some walkers. We found a bench in the village and ate lunch before heading home via a different path.
We met a couple that we had already met along the river path. They told us about some cows along the way. Well that has Sue worried. We did come across the cows but we managed to bypass them and reach the next stile. The path then went over the railway and we walked up into Leyburn. Today we chose the Black Swan to stop at for a drink. We sat outside and people watched before setting off home.

Tonight we had a bbq
Day 3:
A day of rest although we had been told about a pub in the next village of Harmby so we walked the mile to The village pub, The Pheasant Inn had not been altered for years. The walls and ceiling were stained orange with years of tobacco smoke, however the landlady was of old school and lovely, the beer was £2 less than in Leyburn and the locals at the bar gave us great entertainment with their banter. We will try to go back tomorrow. Sue wanted to see the Harmby Waterfall so we found the path into the wood and the waterfall was in full flow.

Sue decided to cool her feet before the walk home across the fields.
Day 4:
It is another hot 🥵 day so we stayed around the van before walking into Leyburn. We needed to go to Campbells for their amazing sausage rolls. Then onto Sue’s favorite shop to get something for Elaine. I needed some cash and a 4 pack of beer so after looking around the market we called in at the Coop but they did not have the beer I wanted so we went to the convenience store and found some beer. Sue got us an ice cream each before we walked home. We just managed to eat them before they totally melted..

The outside temperature was over 33°c so a walk was abandoned and we spent the day dodging in and out of the sun.
Tea tonight is crispy chicken pieces in wraps.
