Trip 4: April 2026, Birdsong Touring Park, Burgh le Marsh, Lincs.
We arrived at the site and there was a welcome notice and our pitch number. Bob came round to explain the setup and we paid for our stay. The site has no shower or toilets but we are self sufficient. However the layout is very well spaced out , it is quiet and the only noises are of the birds and the ducks.

We had lunch and relaxed for a while before going for a walk into Burgh le Marsh. The footpath took us around fields and along an old drovers lane. We did make a mistake when nearing the town because the footpath was not very well signed, but we were shown where the footpath was after we walked up a private drive. The owner was very pleasant and let us continue along his drive to the road.

We walked around the village centre but most places were closed so we continued to find the fifth pub and hope it was open. The Red Lion was open and the beer and wine were almost Wetherspoon prices, so we sat outside in the sun and people watched.

We walked a different way back to the church and picked up the route home.

As we walked back along the old drovers lane through a wood we heard a cuckoo calling. The last time we heard one was a few years ago, also near the Lincolnshire coast at a campsite we used near Saltfleet All Saints.

We got back to the site and sat outside in in the sun for a couple of hours before moving inside as the temperature dropped.
Southern fried chicken for tea, thanks to Lidl. A good first day with a slightly longer walk planned tomorrow.
Day 2:
All morning was spent sat in the sunshine reading. After lunch we set out on a circular route.
The first part of the walk was across fields and then after a short road walk we joined a green lane. Eventually the green lane was crossed by a footpath so we followed the path to a field gate. The path went around a field, unfortunately the field was full of cows with their calves. Sue had a melt down because she is terrified of cows. We climbed a gate and walked up the other side of a hedge avoiding going in with the cows. We rejoined the path across a couple of roads and through a building site.

The next footpath took us through a field with three young bullocks. Sue said she would try it as there were only three beasts. We got halfway across the field and the youngsters decided to come and check is out. They were bouncy and intimidating but they stood still as we did and we stared each other out. They got bored and followed us for 25 yards before stopping and watching us cross the rest of the field. Sue had a heart rate of over 114bpm so we headed into the village and made our way to the Red Lion pub.
We sat outside and listened to a couple of men playing guitars and singing while we had a drink to calm Sue’s nerves.
Needless to say we walked home the normal route back to the campsite avoiding all bovine wildlife.
Day 3:
We walked into Burgh le Matsh in time to go to the Fleece pub which only opens at lunchtime and then again in the evening.

Sue sat outside and I went in for the drinks. I got some banter from a waitress who turned out to be the owner. We had a good laugh and then once outside Sue wanted a menu so she went into the pub and I became the butt of the joke for not getting a menu. We ordered a couple of long rolls. cheese and Onion for Sue and a BLT for me. What we didn’t realise was that they came with salad and chips. They were huge and well worth £7.95 each.

After the food we got another drink and moved to the beer garden out of the wind. The beer garden that was amazing with different displays everywhere.

We left the pub and walked home. The rest of the afternoon was spent getting sun burnt by Iona. What a fabulous three days of weather and it is not quite May yet. We will be back here next year, it is such a peaceful site and an easy walk into the village /town.
Tea tonight is Duck legs with Asparagus and Fondant potato but don’t tell the residents.
