Iona visits an Abbey

Trip 16: Avon Bank Meadow, Pershore.

The day started badly because as I drove out of the drive and waited for Sue to shut the gates the airbag warning lights came on. They continued to flash and the seat belt light joined in. We left anyway and after we got through Grantham only the airbag light stayed on.

The rest of the drive down to Pershore was ok albeit with the airbag warning light on.

The stewards were great and we had a choice of pitches so I went for one in the middle of the campsite, away from trees and hedges. There is an electric post in easy reach if we need the power but we should be ok because there is no TV reception with our aerial.

While we set up it started to rain so we sat in the van until after lunch when the drizzle finally stopped.I suggested a walk along the river so we followed the road to Wyre Mill and joined the footpath through some fields before following the river into Pershore.

We found ASDA next to the water meadow so we were ok if we ran out of anything. We retraced our steps back to the campsite.Tomorrow we will go into the town and find the Abbey, the weather forecast is better.

Pershore Abbey Part of Pershore Abbey was demolished after the reformation when it was surrendered to the King’s Commissioners in 1540, only the tower, choir and south transept remain. (Wikipedia)

Tonight we have some sort of Chinese dish for tea, Prawn Kun Pao 🍤 and special fried rice 🍚 .

Day 2:

The rain has gone and we have sunshine this morning.

We went for a walk into the village of Wyre Piddle, it has a mixture of old timber framed houses and more modern ones. There is a pub that was closed when we walked by but we will call in on the way home.

We followed a footpath behind houses to an old yard where they prepared vegetables before going to market. The path lead through some woods to the river.

We followed the river until we came to a track that took us around a static home park. The path went through some old orchards where we picked a couple of apples for the journey.

We headed back towards Wyre Piddle where we were forced to visit The Anchor pub. We took our drinks out onto one of the many terraces where we could watch the river.

After a fantastic couple of pints and a couple of ciders we headed home, on the way we called into the Church to have a look around. It is one of the first church’s without memorial plaques on the walls despite it being refurbished in 1849. It is very plain with the only brass plaque commemorating two young men from the village who died in the Boar War.

Back at Iona we spent the afternoon reading before a bbq in the last of the sun before retiring inside. A great day.

Day 3:

Cloudy with a little drizzle today. We plan to walk into Pershore and look at the Abbey.

We walked around the town and headed for the Abbey. There is only a certain amount of the Abbey left but what is still here is inspiring. We took several pictures and read many information boards.

We left the Abbey and found a memorial to the horses and farriers that did so much in the First World War. We had a long conversation with an elderly man about the town and the surrounding area and then it got into politics, which were exactly as we thought.

We continued our walk and stopped off at a bakery to get some pasties and buns. We then headed for the park and found a bench near the river to eat our lunch.

We headed home and spent the afternoon reading before retiring into Iona. Tea tonight was stuffed chicken breasts .

Day 4.

We spent the day around Iona but then at about 15.00 we went for a walk to the Anchor Inn pub. We had a couple of pints and the headed back home stopping by the river where we met another camper. She had a chocolate Labrador who just wanted to swim in the river.

We spent the afternoon and evening making the most of the sun before retiring inside for tea. Pitta breads and Spicy Chicken for tea.
