Iona goes to the Cliffs

Trip 16: Woodhill Campsite, East Runton, Norfolk

We arrived at the site on time and we got a pitch very near the facilities. I made a slight adjustment with the ramps and we were sorted.

We had lunch and read for a bit before getting ready for a walk. We set off to East Runton village and then down the access slipway to the beach. We headed towards Cromer.

The walk along the beach was quite hard because the tide had just turned to go out and the sand was soft and wet.

Once we reached the prom we headed for the pier. We watched people attempting to surf although most looked like a school outing. Quite a few families were fishing for crabs from the pier.

We headed for the Pavillion pub and sat outside on the pier watching 4 surfers trying to catch the big one.

The tide was fully out when we started back, we were soon at East Runton so we made our way up the slipway to the road to home. Tea tonight was lasagne.

Day 2:

The coastal path towards the Beeston Bump

It is not as bright today but we plan to walk to Sheringham. We left the campsite and walked along the coastal path, this took us over the Beeston Bump and down towards Sheringham. We followed a path down to the sea front and then walked along the promenade to the other side of Sheringham.

We then climbed up to the outskirts of the town and walked back into the town. Our first stop was the railway station where a train had just arrived while being pulled by a steam locomotive.

We took a picture and waited until it departed, then we walked all around the town.

We headed for the prom and found a bench out of the wind where we ate lunch. The next stop was to walk back to the Crown pub for a drink before heading back to East Runton along the beach. We also needed to waste some time so that the tide had a bit longer to go out.

The walk along the beach was hard work because it is mainly shingle which then turns to sand which had been churned by the walkers.

We stopped at the West Runton slipway to use the facilities and then continued along the beach until we eventually reached the East Runton slipway.

Today we climbed the slipway and called in at the White Horse pub and restaurant.

The last time we were here in 2023 the pub was closed and being refurbished. It is very new and pleasant inside but more a restaurant than a pub.

The White Horse
The Bar

However the same owners have refurbished a club house next door and it is now Harry’s Bar which is apparently more of a sports bar, we hope to visit it before we leave on Friday.

Tea tonight is stuffed chicken breasts although the recipe has been adjusted because when Sue opened the goats cheese it was not in a good condition although well within the eat by date.

Our walk was about 8.6 miles and we have done 9.3 miles today

Day 3m

Today we walked inland and followed paths to the top of Incleborough Hill. One path was so steep I had to stop several times to calm the breathing down. Once at the top the view was worth it, you could see our campsite and then looking north you can see Sheringham.

Woodhill park from Incleborough hill

We continued following the paths and went down hill to a junction where we joined a road that lead to another campsite. The next footpath was just before the campsite and as luck would have it another climb was in order, this time a bit easier and through some beautiful woods.

We left the wood and joined a road into West Runton. We actually walked past a pub on the way to the beach. I knew the tide was coming in because my app said high tide at 13.15 and it was 12.30.

High Tide at West Runton

On this part of the coast there is still beach to walk along at high tide so we headed for East Runton .

The walk along the shingle was hard work and we were pleased to get to the slipway at East Runton. We found a bench overlooking the beach where we could eat our lunch and watch a couple of men surfing.

After lunch we headed up the slipway and at the top we headed for Harry’s Bar. This is owned by the same couple who bought and refurbished the White Horse that we visited yesterday.

Harry’s Bar

We had a couple of drinks and got warm before heading back to the campsite.

Today we did 6.5 miles but it was harder than yesterday, with the hills and walking along the shingle.

Tonight we have Gammon shanks for tea, and tomorrow we head home to a cold house with a broken boiler but that is for another day.
