Iona visits Mr Moo’s Ice Cream Shop

Trip 6: May 2025.

Mr Moo’s Ice Cream Parlour, Skipsea,Yorkshire

One long drive and we are at Mr Moo’s . There are several camping fields from fully serviced with showers etc to a basic rally field, that is where we are wild camping. There are not many here and in the first field where we are there is just us and the 2 steward vans. There are 4 or 5 other campers in the adjoining field.

The view from Iona

We got the van level and set up as the rain set in for the afternoon. After lunch and a nanna nap we walked along a path down to the sea. The tide was in and it reaches upto the ‘beach’ so we were unable to proceed further. We will try again at low tide.

The tide is in

We followed the path back to Mr Moo’s but even sitting in their picnic area we could not get a wifi or a 4g signal. We will try the Broad Inn pub garden tomorrow if we get the tides right.

Day 2:

Low tide

We walked down to the beach and the tide was out so we were able to walk towards Skipsea Sands. We hoped to get upto the cliff path but the cliff erosion made it impossible.

After 2 miles we stopped to eat our sandwiches on the beach and the continued on until we could get off the beach and join the coastal path. This took us through a couple of caravan sites until we finally found the road to Skipsea village.

The road had no footpath and it was a bit dangerous especially when a bus came toward us but we made it to Skipsea and headed for the Board Inn for a drink before the final 3/4 mile walk back to the campsite.

We were blessed with the sun as opposed to the forecast that said rain so we sat outside, we cooked a bbq but we ate inside as it began to get cold, however after we ate tea the sun again appears so we sat outside for half an hour before going into the van for the rest of the evening.

Day 3:

It rained most of the night but stopped around 10.00am. We headed for the beach and turned towards Hornsea. The cliffs are being eroded quite badly and you often see pipes and concrete from caravan parks that have fallen onto the beach.

We walked 3 miles and we got to some sort of ww2 defences. The cliff is so eroded that it may have been a gun emplacement with ammunition storage that would have been underground.

Coastal defences still standing.

We turned around and headed back towards Skipsea. We found a seal pup on the beach, it looked exhausted and it did not even open its eyes as I walked around it.

We left it and halfway home we saw a neighbour walking his dogs and heading towards the seal. We met him later at Mr Moo’s and he said the dogs had found the seal but left it alone and he rang a helpline and sent them pictures and a What Three Words location.

We found some rocks where the cliff had collapsed so we stopped for lunch.

The wind had certainly got stronger as we entered the campsite. We did try sitting outside but the wind got the better of us and we went inside to read. Sue wanted some ice cream to go with tonight’s desert so we walked to Mr Moo’s and got a tub of ice cream for tonight and we both had an ice cream to eat there and then. Great ice cream and we can see why it is so busy.

Day4:

Raining this morning but we made the effort to walk to the Board Inn in Skipsea for lunch. We each had a Chip Butty which was basically a bun and a bowl of chips, we also had a bowl of onion rings. I personally did not like the taste of the bun and the onion rings were very greasy so I ate the chips but  Sue liked it and ate hers.

We then walked down Cliff Road to where the road stops abruptly where it fell into the sea. The coastal path was marked and we followed it past the Hill Billy shacks perched on the cliff top only yards from the edge. Then we joined the path that lead us back to the campsite. We only did 4 miles today and then we spent the rest of the day reading until it was Ice Cream time at Mr Moo’s.

We just had a sandwich for tea. The Lionesses played Portugal tonight so that was me sorted, and they won 6:0

Everything is packed away ready for the drive home tomorrow. The next trip is to Otley RFC.
