Iona goes to Worcestershire

Trip 9: Oak House Stays, Martley.

I made a mistake and did not check the sat nav route that loaded. It took us through Worcester that was not planned, and then a road was closed. However the workmen let us through as they were just changing the last of the ‘cats eyes’ and we were allowed to continue so we arrived at the site from a different direction.

Helen came to meet us and showed us the pitch we were on, it is a CS so only 5 pitches. Our pitch is near a tree so we may be in shade some of the time but there is no sun at present. The site has free wifi, toilets and a shower room which to be honest could be in a hotel. There is electric but we decided to go without hook up and use our own solar power.

Once we were set up and we had eaten our lunch we got bored. Sue has a painful foot but we went for a walk to check out the footpaths.

We ended up at the Mason’s Arms which was just over a mile from the site. We had a couple of drinks and headed back home. There is still no sun but I cooked tea on the CampinGaz. Simple sausage and burgers for our first tea.

Day2.

We left the campsite at 11.00am, and headed via footpaths to Cob House park which is mainly a fishing site with several lakes, but it also has a popular cafe and a range of animals, pigs, goats, chickens, ponies and alpacas. There is also a camping field that we stayed on several years ago. Now they have a proper site but to be honest it all looks a bit run down apart from the fishing lake.

Laugherne House, now exclusive apartments

We left the site and found a fallen tree to sit on and eat our pack up before moving on. We headed to the Mason Arms for some refreshment before heading back to the campsite.

The Mason’s Arms

Once home the sun was out and we sat outside reading. We had tea outside. There was a hot air balloon in the distance and we were watching it as well as our neighbour. Our neighbour told us about her husband wanting a go but she eventually agreed to a hang glider flight off of a clifftop, but that is another story.

We moved inside to finish watching the football match while Sue watched East Enders on the iplayer.

Day 3:

Today we walked into Martley via the normal route through the industrial yard and then turned right to follow a different route to the church.

We pasted the church and headed out of the village onto footpaths towards the river. At one point the path down to the river became very muddy and too difficult to follow so we headed back up the hill a short way and cut through the wood by following an old trail before rejoining the proper path.

Nice day for a vintage drive.

The path was not the best and we could only just see the river Teme until we emerged onto the common where there was a seat overlooking the river and a sort of beach, so we ate lunch here.

After lunch we headed up the steep hill and joined another path. This one took us across fields until we came to a steep embankment. We followed the path down the hill and eventually out into civilisation. We were back where we started.

The pub that we intended to stop at was closed and being refurbished so we headed for the church and joined the path that would take us back to the campsite.

Day 4:

Today was spent around the motorhome, reading. The sun was out and it was peaceful. Two campers left this morning and a motorhome arrived. The old couple with the Triumph TR6 moved up next to us and he spent the afternoon cleaning and polishing the TR6.

Our last few hours here reading and watching Robert the robot mower dealing with mole hills.
