Iona finds the North York Moors

Trip 8: Hutton le Hole, North Yorkshire Moors.

Our previous trip was in the North Yorkshire Dales so we have moved North East from Ilkley to Hutton le Hole. It is another new site for us. This is a small village with a Public house, some Tea rooms, Craft workshops and the Ryedale Folk Museum

The drive took us 3 hours despite the major roadworks on the A1. The campsite is on a hill behind the Ryedale Folk museum. We are surrounded by trees and there is no phone signal, so no internet.

We setup camp and had lunch and then decided to just walk into the village for a look around before going out properly tomorrow. The village is very picturesque with a stream running through the middle.

We found two tea shops, one of which has an ice cream shop with a huge variety of flavours. There is a craft centre with a gallery, a craft shop and a Chocolate shop. The old school has been converted to a shop with a cafe. Then there is the Crown pub which we called in to for a drink.

We did manage to pick up a BT WiFi signal so our phones could be updated.

Tomorrow we will go for a long walk exploring the area.

Day 2:

I went for a walk first thing in the morning to find a wifi position in the village. I found a hotspot near some benches. I went back and told Sue so we got ready to go on a walk. We spoke to the stewards on the way out and she gave us the password for the museum’s guest wifi.

We sat on a bench opposite the museum and we were able to get a decent wifi signal. Sue was pleased and did her Wordle. After we had updated our iPads we moved off towards a footpath to the moors.

We found the path and headed out towards a hill that was the highest point around. The only problem was that the path was very steep, probably a 1in2, I made it but I had to take three short stops to get my breath back, my pulse went upto 124bpm.

On top of the moor, the white dots are sheep.

We reached the top but the way we wanted to go was private and we had to follow a sheep track down to the bottom and eventually join the public footpath that we were on earlier. We headed back to the village to join another footpath onto the moor which enabled us to do a circular route back to the village.

We came across various sheep including a flock of black sheep. We also found some cows along with calves and a bull. Luckily for Sue they were in a separate field.

However a couple were curious and came to check us out, well me , because Sue was about 50 metres away.

We eventually arrived back at Iona after a total of 6 miles. We had lunch in the van and tried out the Crimpit unit to make toasted cheese sandwiches. They turned out quite well but further practice is needed.

Day 3

We have another overcast day with sunshine forecast for the afternoon. This morning we are going to go around the Ryedale Folk Museum.

First stop was the village green to get wifi and update the iPads. We then walked over to the museum. There are 19 buildings to look at, all have been moved from their original location to preserve them. From a great Hall to a prehistoric roundhouse.

All the building are furnished in a particular era. There is a model village, barns full of agricultural equipment, animals, as well as a Chemist, Tin Smith, Black Smith ,Cobbler, a Cooper, Village Shop and a Saddler. Great value and well worth visiting. We spent over 2 hours walking around.

We left the museum and walked next door to the pub for a drink and their free wifi. After a couple of drinks we made our way back to the campsite. The sun appeared every now and again from behind the clouds but the wind was still cool.

We put the windbreak up but it did not make much difference, however I still cooked outside on the Cadac, burgers & sausages today.

Day 4:

Still no sunshine. We went to the wifi tree to update the iPads and then the sun came out ant we spent the rest of the day by the van.

We tried the crimpit gadget again and it worked heating them in a frying pan. Goats cheese and ham worked well.

The evening meal was a sort of risotto with prawns but something went wrong, the prawns were ok but the rice was mushy and hot with chilli. Not to be repeated.

We packed up the chairs and the windbreak ready for tomorrows departure and headed inside, in the relative warmth on the moho.

Our next trip is to Darley Dale.
